Iguazu Falls from the Brazilian side
My mother travelled quite a bit in her later years. Cruises with her mother in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, trips to visit us in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and a journey to South America.
With all those travels, she decided she had two most favourite tourist destinations—the places she thought the most scenic and rewarding. One was the impressive archaeological site of Ephesus in Turkey and the other was the magnificent Iguazu Falls that straddle Argentina and Brazil.
Mum saw the falls from the Argentine side, which I have already written about. We’ve been lucky enough to see them from both countries on our travels with Oasis Overland.
People still debate whether the view is more spectacular from Argentina or Brazil. I’m sort of on the fence.
Iguazu Falls are located where the Iguazu River tumbles over the edge of the Paraná Plateau. In terms of area, it is the largest waterfall system in the world. It is 2.7 kilometres long and arranged in a way that resembles a reversed letter ‘J’.
The border between Brazil and Argentina runs through the U-shaped Devil’s Throat, which is something like 1000 football fields in size (if I did the calculations right).
Most of falls (80 per cent) lie on the Argentine side. It’s easier to get up close and personal on that side. The catwalks are longer and get you closer to the famous Devil’s Throat and the San Martin Island. Plus there’s a boat that takes you near to the fall, where you can be guaranteed to get wet.
But the Brazilian side has a lot going for it. That side, which we visited second, is more compact. But it gave us great views of the large expanse of Argentine falls and another catwalk that got us really close to the Devil’s Throat.
There was also an option for a helicopter ride over the falls. I suppose it’s not really environmentally sound, but I did it anyway (at Poor John’s urging). My dad was a pilot and I suppose he’d be cross if I passed up any opportunity to fly. I’ll post about that soon.
But overall, I’d have to say that the view from the Argentine side is probably marginally more spectacular, but I’d still do either again any time.
P.S. I’ll post the aerial pics soon because they have great views of the Devil’s Throat.
P.P.S. If all this water is making you thirsty, check out this typical Brazilian drink—caipirinha—on my cooking blog.
Positively gorgeous, and how cool you have this place as a special bond with your mum! When I see your photos I have to remind myself just how vast and mysterious the world is; even the places we know have this other-worldliness to them, like they’re just stopping by in our mundane life to remind us there’s more to living than drive-thrus and Facebook. 🙂

You have such great insights Jean. My mother died 18 years ago and I feel especially blessed that I have seen the two places she cherished most (besides home—she was a real homebody).

Stunning falls is all I can say. I love the 2 tiers (of water) – makes it much more interesting than a single fall of water.

You’re right Vicki, the tiers make the falls much more interesting.

How wonderful to be able to walk in your mother’s footsteps. Your photo’s would be beautiful hanging on a wall.

It was very special to see the falls through her eyes. Not sure how I could choose a photo to hang. I’ll think about it. Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂

I think Alie would agree with your Mum on the two favorite sites. We loved the falls but did not get to the Brazilian side [is my envy showing?] And I don’t think my post on the falls included a picture of me pushing a wheelchair out to the Devils Throat wearing a hotel shower cap to protect my hearing aids — I looked ridiculous, but it was worth it.

Oh my goodness, you gave me the best laugh of today. If I’d been there with my mum, I’d have probably been pushing her in a wheelchair. She couldn’t always walk far, but she’d still go.

I have never seen any natural sight to compare with these falls, Peggy. I am suitably envious, and happy that you are able to show them to us.
Best wishes, Pete.

Iguazu is magnificent isn’t it. I’ve been to both sides too but about 35 years apart so I don’t remember the Brazilian side too much. What I do remember is taking a boat across the top of the falls and stopping off at a little island in the middle and looking down over the falls from there. It looks possibly like it was where that walkway is now in your opening shot. It was a little row boat with an outboard. If that engine had failed we’d have had no chance. I can’t remember if I actually thought about that at the time or not. The other thing I remember is the butterflies. We visited the Argentinian side about 3 years ago, and yes, we went in that boat and got wet. Very wet.

I truly cannot imagine going above the falls in a row boat. Obviously you did it when you were still invincible. 🙂
I did a post on the butterflies at Iguazu, and a publishing company chose one pic to use on a cover of a book. I should do a post about that.

Oh yes! You should write a post about that. Congratulations.
And yes I was still young and invincible 🙂

Hi Peggy, yes the Iguazu Falls are very spectacular. The boat trip underneath was mind-blowing.
By the way, if yourself and John would like to revisit your Mums trip to Ephesus please remember that I have an apartment near Bodrum in which you are very welcome to stay. Bodrum is about 2 1/2 hours by car from Ephesus. A nice drive or you could get a coach. Just let me know. You would both be very welcome.
Best regards

Hi Eamon, what a kind offer. One of these days we’ll get back to Turkey and we’ll be sure to let you know when that is. And, of course, you and the family are always welcome in Australia.

Peggy, Iguazu Falls are such an amazing place. From memory, (we were there in 1998) both sides had advantages. Like Alison, I remember all the beautiful butterflies. We went there for a long weekend from Buenos Aires where we living at the time. Our two young daughters loved it. We also visited the bird sanctuary on the Brazillian side and walked through a huge aviary with mawcaws and hummingbirds.
I agree with Sharon above amazing that three generations have been there.
