Breakfast is tops on this trip

Breakfast in Eastern Europe

My first plate of food at breakfast—just getting started

Any thoughts of me losing weight on this trip—I often do when travelling overland—have been completely abandoned this time around. I mean how can I resist breakfast? Remember it’s the most important meal of the day! Right?.

Poor John and I are doing two self-drive car trips—eight days around Finland (after a side trip to Sweden) and 13 days in the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Breads and sweets

Breads and sweets

stewed fruit and yoghurt

Spiced rhubarb (in the back on the left) is sensational

It’s a sort of package deal that includes the car, basic routes to follow, tips for sightseeing, hotel accommodation AND the breakfasts. Most of the hotels have been four-star or more (not our usual travelling style) and the breakfasts have been even better. Some days we’re verging on 10 stars, if that’s possible.

Frankly Eastern Europe and Scandinavia have breakfast honed to a fine art. None of this continental offering of a dried-out croissant, cold toast, hard butter and jam in a tiny plastic tub.

Oh no! Breakfast in these parts is serious business.

Most places have had buffets with eggs, bacon, sausages, meatballs, various kinds of potatoes, multiple kinds of cereal, a wide range of fruit and juices, stewed fruits, many kinds of cheese and lunch meats, olives and pickles, lots of raw vegetables such as cucumbers, seafood (even gravlax and smoked salmon), bread of all kinds, homemade jams and local honeys, and some sinful dessert-y things like chocolate-covered donuts, cinnamon biscuits or custard tarts.

Here are some of the unexpected high spots.

Frozen yogurt in Finland

Frozen yoghurt dispenser (only at breakfast) and tins of donuts, biscuits and other treats. The plump little character on the tins is Moomin, who is famous in Finland. I think he’s been eating too much breakfast, just like me

Cumulus Hotel in Lappeenranta, Finland, serves frozen yoghurt, but only at breakfast!

Vihula Manor in Estonia offers herring doused in eight or so kinds of sauce, including blueberry. I like pickled in mustard sauce best.

Mezotne Palace in Latvia cooks up the most beautifully seasoned fried eggs I’ve ever had. Absolute perfection with salt, pepper and dill.

Cereals

Plenty of cereals

Breakfast choices

Breakfast choices

Smoked salmon and herring

Smoked salmon and herring with sauces

Stikliai Hotel in Vilnius, Lithuania, makes wonderful chocolate cake truffles rolled in more chocolate and nuts.

But those are just temptations. I could go on and on, but my mouth’s full and I probably need to burp.

And we still have eight days of breakfasts to go! Geez, I am enjoying this. Part of that is because rhubarb, grapefruit, olives, pickles, cheese and herring have been popular on almost every table. Burp!

By the way, I’ve read that the deluxe hotel we are staying in tonight has the best breakfast in all of Lithuania. I’ll give it my best shot tomorrow morning and try to report back.

Oh, and for the most part the coffee has been very good, although one day it was quite cool/cold.

P.S. So sorry that some of the photos are a bit fuzzy. I took most of them with my 6-year-old smart-ish phone. It may be headed for retirement, or I could give it to Poor John who has never, ever had a mobile phone of any kind. Also, some of the dishes I’ve bragged about didn’t make the photo choices. Just too out-of-focus.

P.P.S. It you’re a sucker for breakfast, check out one of my most successful page-32 recipes for a great start to the day—my breakfast bowl. I’ll be making it again when I get home and dreaming of breakfasts on the road. Burp!

I love those meats, black bread, and pastries. Eastern Europe knows how to do a breakfast. After all, it is usually very cold there!
    Best wishes, Pete.

The breakfasts have been wonderful. The one thing I can be thankful for is that I make all our bread, including dark rye.

What? No breakfast tacos? JK. The rhubarb and herring are on someone else’s plate, but the rest of I make me want take the wife, rent a room downtown just for the decadence of a killer breakfast buffet! Stay safe.

You won’t find a breakfast taco in these parts, and I’ll be happy to deal with all the rhubarb and herring.

It was orgsanised by an outfit called Bentours, although now that we have done it, it is something we could probably have arranged ourselves.

Moomin is so cute. We’ve bought two Moomin cups and a Moomin clock for our kitchen. My posts are timed to coincide with Australia, so they’ll almost always be posted ‘tomorrow’ for you. 🙂

Breakfast of champions. When we were in Poland we couldn’t get over the array of food and that cereal and toast were down the list. We walked as much as we could and ate lighter lunches. But weight loss was more when we got home.

Yes, we’re walking and walking and walking, which is the only reason I feel I can even look at breakfasts. Back to a couple of spoons of gruel in Australia.

Probably the colder climate and the need for warming food first thing in the morning.

Sound like your lunch should be an apple on the run….. and dinner……..grilled salmon & bunny food (aka lettuce & herb salad).

The photos are just fine. They do the job. We’ve stayed in places like these from time to time over the years – the hotel in Venice comes to mind – and I’m always overwhelmed by it. How do I get my money’s worth and not make myself sick? We also travel with sandwich tubs so a breakfast buffet like these is also the time to make lunch. Yum.

This morning’s breakfast sounded special, but it was just okay. Three little pieces of smoked salmon, one egg Florentine and a bit of fruit. Nothing like what we’ve been used to! We’ll hope for more flair tomorrow. And yes, the Moomins are so cute. A real symbol of Finnish coffee cups and more.

The only time I feast at breakfast is on a trip! I am fascinated by this travel model – a car plus some guidance on sights and places to stay? We love to be in charge of our driving so we can stop at will, but it does seem nice to have some of the logistical work done by someone else. I’ll have to check this out for a central Europe road trip we are considering for this fall.

Let me know what countries you’re interested in and I’ll see what’s being promoted through our travel agent in Australia. She gives amazing guidance too. I think we could have organised most of this trip ourselves, but a few places have been fully booked when we arrived, so it’s been lucky that our room was already reserved. Accommodation in the Baltic States has been on the deluxe side, but that’s what we ‘ordered’. A bit of pampering every now and then is a good thing. 🙂 Anyway, happy to add two-cents worth if it would be helpful. Probably can do more once we’re home after the 25th of June.

Amazing, Peggy. The breakfasts are certainly colourful and to say plentiful would be putting it mildly. How stuffed can a person get for breakfast? Lol But the variety of foods on offer is wonderful. I love all the fruits and cereals and I’ll bear frozen yoghurt in mind (having never tried it frozen) but biscuits and such like are a definite no for breakfast for me. It seems the diet must wait till you get home, Peggy! 🙂

We’re still enjoying the bounty of breakfast, but the last few places haven’t had buffets, so we have managed to go a little easier on quantity. By the way, frozen yoghurt is very popular in Australia as an alternative to ice cream.

The really good thing about super big breakfasts when you’re travelling is that they keep you going. A coffee and light snack is usually sufficient for lunch, saving both time and money..

We’ve mixed it up a bit. Buying cheese, bread, lunch meat and cucumber to have for lunch or dinner. It’s depended on what local food we find as we travel. Always like to try the local fare when it’s available.

You had me at the herring! I know I know it’s a strange thing but I love herring! Especially eaten on the streets of Amsterdam or the sweet Danish herring with raisins we had growing up…the Lithuanian Jewish ancestory at work. My grandfather was born in Lithuania and traveled to South Africa solo at age 16 lured by stories of gold and diamonds!
