Hit by the proverbial freight train

He came out of nowhere. In fact, I didn’t even see him coming. It was only later that I even learned it was a him.

We were in the Brussels North bus station trying to find our bus to Paris. There were plenty of Flix buses around, but none heading for Paris.

Poor John did a fact-finding foray and then I set out on one.

I’d gone maybe 50 metres when I was hit by a freight train, or what seemed like a freight train. I’d still be lying there on the ground if three kind people hadn’t helped me to my feet and collected the things that slipped out of the side pockets of my backpack.

I was so dazed, I have no idea what people were saying to me, except I knew they were trying to be reassuring and helpful.

I staggered back to where Poor John was standing. I was breathless, hunched over, hobbling, in shock and probably fairly incoherent. He asked, Did that guy hit you? I saw him running and thought he’d knocked someone over.

It confounds me that Poor John always manages to miss these attacks on me. He was walking in front of me when I got hit by a motor scooter in Hanoi four years ago. It was going the wrong way on a one-way street. He said he heard a whoompf. When he looked back, he didn’t know if the sound had come from me, the woman who hit me or the crowd. At any rate, I was the one lying on the ground.

You can read about that disaster here and here.

Anyway, we’re still not sure what happened this time. Poor John had a look around and saw that one teenager had been grabbed and was being held by the police, but probably wasn’t the one who barrelled into me. Most likely, the pair had committed some crime and were being chased by the cops.

All I could do was sit on the pavement in a sort of stunned silence until it started to rain. We moved to a bit of shelter and the bus came eventually. It’s probably good that I had four hours of just sitting quietly on a bus.

So here I am with wounds all over. I don’t even know which side the guy hit me from. My whole right arm is wrenched. Did he hit me there or are the injuries from the fall. Still deciding whether my right shoulder is dislocated and whether my right thumb will regain function. My left hand, left thumb and left knee are going to be okay.

Thank goodness, I didn’t hit my head or lose a tooth. Yay!

But if you don’t hear from me much over the next few days, I can assure you that typing is a challenge.

Aww how awful, I have a very muscular body, had an unfortunate incident in school, I now always careful that a little swag of mine, won’t hurt anyone.

I can understand how painful it might have been.

Sending you my energy, hope you get recovered soon. In our culture, it’s trial and tested since centuries to take turmeric powder with milk, you recover from external and internal injuries.

In our part of the world, we use it as an organic way to recover since childhood to all the way before we die.

John assures me that I can cycle as little or an much as I’m feeling up to, so I’ll survive. Libby’s husband, Daniel, is in Copenhagen tonight, but I have no way to put you two in touch. It is difficult to “like” a post when the content is about the author’s train wreck moment in a foreign country. And missing those moments is a husband thing. I say this in a spirit of empathy. Ice patches, Not many, not bad. We’re walking to the car from the grocery store. I get to the car, no wife. I look back and a stranger is helping her hobble to the car. It took a cortisone shot to finally get her shoulder back. Sleep on the side that hurts the least, and make it home in one piece!

I’ve always thought that Belgian bus stations are more dangerous than crossing Africa by truck. But that’s only because I’ve met prejudiced Dutch and French people who thing Belgium is a black hole between Amsterdam and Paris. I’ve never been there but have always wanted to go to Bruges (the film) and Ghent (the non-Vermeer). Glad you are all right!

Sometimes, I find myself on the ground without any other person or thing involved, and even then, it’s always a shock. My sympathies. Hope you are treating yourself extra nice, and that everything sorts itself out. -Susan

Dirty pool! He didn’t give you a change to retaliate as I’m sure you would have done. Direct all kinds of evil thoughts toward the culprit while you heal. It might help.

Oh Peggy I’m so sorry to hear that, that’s what George was commenting on, I didn’t understand at the time! I see from your next post that you are feeling a little better, thank goodness for that. Wow how stunned you must have been, I’m so glad it wasn’t any worse. I’ll say a healing prayer for you tonight too, I’ll join the crowd that is helping you to mend!! xo

Ouch and ouch again. How awful for you. I hope you are recovering. It must have been shocking! It immediately reminded of me in primary school, about 9 years old, classes are in so the hallways are empty, I’m running fast (not allowed of course but there’s no one to see me), I get to the end of the hallway and start to turn the corner at full speed, a smaller kid is coming at speed in the opposite direction. The first knowledge we have of each other is when his hard head barrels full bore into my stomach. I’m so winded I can’t speak.

I can only imagine how shocked and pained you were by the collision. I do so hope you are starting to feel better now and any injuries starting to improve. Do you have any arnica cream to put on the sore spots? It’s my lifesaver with all my falls & bumps. It’s the type of homeopathic cream (or tincture) you can probably get in Europe. I carry a tiny jar everywhere, as, if you’re quick enough putting it on, it will stop bruising and reduce the soreness considerably.

(I’ve had no computer for a day or so and missed this post).

Oh my, it’s poor you definitely, not poor John 😉 Were there no witnesses who saw the whole thing happening? Maybe wise to have checked in with a local doctor or hospital, though understand you must have been anxious to keep on travelling and had to catch your connection, but better safe than in trouble later, right..hope you heal well and rest of your travels goes without brutes like this running you over😘

Oh no! Did he hit you with your body? Trying to steal things? Tourist scammers are the worst. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Much worse than a sore ankle.

He wasn’t trying to steal anything from me. He may have done that to others. He was on the run from the cops.

Thanks Jean. The shoulder and arm are still suffering, but I only have 44 kilometres to go (and wifi today) so am fairly confident I’ll make it to the end of the bike ride.

Peggy, I’m so sorry to hear this has happened to you. It was a nasty accident to have, considering no vehicle was involved, just some human maniac! I know it happened a while ago now, so I’m hoping you’re recovered, although the wrenched arm would have taken time to heal. Hope all other bruises have faded and your right thumb is working again. All that pain because of a mindless idiot! Did you ever find out what he was running from? (No need to answer that if you’re still not OK.) Take care of yourself.
