Shanghai benefits from a bend in the river

Who knew a peninsula formed by a bend in a river could bring fame and fortune to a city? But that’s exactly what has happened in Shanghai.
Lujiazui is located in Shanghai’s Pudong New District. It’s a peninsula on the eastern bank of the Huangpu River and directly opposite the Bund, the city’s old financial and business district.
Since the early 1990s, Lujiazui has been being developed as the city’s new financial and business centre. Today, the area has more than 30 high-rise buildings (25 stories or more) with commerce as their leading function, and more than 504 domestic and overseas financial and insurance corporations.
We had the good fortune to visit Lujiazui and the Bund both at night and during the day.

I have to say that the night skylines are among the most beautiful and impressive we have seen anywhere in the world.
We stayed at ground level at night, but during the day we went to the top-floor terrace of the Fairmont Peace Hotel (I’ll do a post about that amazing art deco hotel soon).
That terrace is only about 11 floors up, but it was free to visit. We read that some hotels charge up to A$30 to ride their elevators to the top (and much higher) floors. We figured that was just a case of daylight robbery. 🙂

That is a gorgeous skyline! I have seen many photos of it before, but it still never ceases to amaze. Charlotte, NC has a building that is very similar to the one with the cutout in the top section. I wonder who copied who!

My family lived in Shanghai for five years around 2010 and its still their favourite place. Of course it was before me (Ralph) was born but I’ve seen the incredible photos… one day …

I love the night scene of the Bund.
(and glad to hear Potsie is moving into rehab. – I’m hoping he has the good fortune to be in a place where the latest research is being implemented for physiotherapy and training for the other side of the brain to take over the functions and damage lost. I never ceased to be amazed at the power of the Mind).

$30 to use the lift 😲 …. wonderful pictures but mostly I am heartened by the need on Potsie though doubtless it is a question of baby steps on a long road. I remain actively engaged in supporting him from here 🙂

My stepson spent a year working with four severely brain-injured adults in a specialist rehab unit. He has now moved on and is working autistic young adults and I am so proud of him. Potsie will need all the love and care and all the determination to succeed but he WILL get there. I fell I know him through you – please tell him that your dotty Franglais friend is rooting for him and sending her strongest magic his way through the ether. I will not promise to cook for him but I do promise I will not give up. I think you know me well enough to know that is a certainty 🌸

I’m super proud of your son too. His work is an act of love, determination and hope. Potsie moves to rehab today and the best news is that he is able to lift his left leg. All in the right direction. Thanks so much for weaving your strong magic.

Godspeed to Potsie. I once got busted offering historical landmark commentary in the Sheraton Waikiki’s free outside elevator. People tipped me, I kept riding! The skyline is fantastic and it’s down to the amazing colors. And the architectural melange is something almost every other city in the world would have zoning arguments for years about and they just build it. How cool is that?

Thank you for the update from your friend! Daylight robbery about the elevator ride is right. I mean, you can always charge for refreshments, or to use those telescope-binocular thingeys, but just to ride the elevator? Pish and spit on that!
