No wonder the dog was out of her wits last night

lightning in Canberra

Local photographer Glenn Martin captures the spectacular lightning last night north of Canberra

Indi, our standard schnauzer, may watch television, but she can’t cope with thunder and lightning. She’s not thrilled about fireworks either. We’ve had several noisy thunderstorms over the last 10 days or so. Most have come at night which means she jumps on the bed to be comforted.

Last week I decamped to the single bed in Libby’s room and took the dog with me. Last night she was a wreck, and Poor John decamped to Libby’s room. Indi stayed with me.

Thanks to a post on Facebook, I know what really set her off last night. A bit after midnight, local photographer, Glenn Martin, took himself to the top of Mount Ainslie (not far from our house) to capture about 100 shots of the ‘sound and light’ performance.

Mother Nature sure knows how to put on a show. Martin sure knows how to record it.

P.S. I hadn’t known of Martin’s work before, but you can be sure I’ll follow it now. All of his prints are available for sale.

Behaviorists are not yet sure what part of the storm frightens dogs most, whether they’re reacting to lightning flashes, the sound of thunder, wind blowing around the house, or the sound of rain on the roof. Some dogs even start to pace and whine half an hour or more before a storm.

    PS… Wonderful shot !!!!

What a storm! Great photo, I agree.Luckily, our Ollie is unaffected by storms or fireworks. But we may never have had a storm like that one, in Beetley. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

It was an amazing storm and brought a bit of rain too. We’ve had two standard schnauzers and both have hated thunder and lightning.

Very brave photographer to go up a Mount to capture such a beautiful, but also dangerous Mother Nature event. Incredible results, his picture is stunning. Your poor dog must have been so scared😄

Indi was so wound up. I don’t know how to calm her other than to just be there for her. On his facebook page, Glenn Martin said the storm was far enough to the north that he felt he wasn’t in danger.

What a photo! Have you considered a Thundershirt for Indi? They’re supposed to help calm dogs.

I’ve tried something similar to a thundershirt, but it doesn’t have any effect. Luckily we don’t have such storms very often.

We had a border collie who used to chase lightning strikes around the farm. She would run and bark through the paddocks like mad, while her son ‘Max’, a kelpie, would cower under our chair.
Milo, our Jack Russell is indifferent but looks at us as if to say; ‘ just stay calm’.

Maybe Milo could help Indi to stay calm. Would have been funny to watch your border collie chase lightning.

What an amazing photo. Dogs have much better hearing than humans so it’s not surprising they get upset by thunder.

I really respect lightning. Over the years, I’ve been in four buildings that were struck by lightning. Maybe that’s why the dogs are nervous.

Thunder drives our female Irish Setter onto the bed or skittering around the bedroom. I know they have testimonials (doesn’t everything?) but the doggie Thundershirt? Drop the second r and that’s how well it worked.

    LP,

A fantastic photo of the lightning storm in your area! A brave photographer to be outside and using a METAL Tripod???

My Irish Terrier dog is not scared of lightning and loud thunder, I think because of his dog traits loud noses do not effect him. They were used in WWI to relay messages between battlefield command posts. The conditions of war at that time was gun fire, fires all around, wounded people, bombs etc.

Methinks that Thundershirts and related products are a bit of a gimmick. I borrowed a shirt once for Aggie (the dog in the banner) and it didn’t give him any relief. Going deaf in his old age was the only thing that allowed him to ignore thunder.

What I found most interesting was the lightning that we did not see between Panama and Australia. The Pacific Ocean seemed lightning free, perhaps because of our distance from major land masses until we reached Oz. Literally, 2.5 years without an electrical storm that I can recall.
