Poor John gets ‘the works’ in Taiwan

Applying shaving cream

Like many of us, Poor John has been hanging out for a haircut. A couple of weeks ago, he had an appointment at the local hairdressing school which had re-opened. Sadly, he had to cancel because he had the sniffles. He even got tested for Covid-19—negative. Then the school closed for two weeks of winter holidays.

He has a new appointment—for tomorrow—but it won’t compare to the haircut with ‘the works’ that he got in Jui-Fen, Taiwan in December.

Jui-Fen was one of our stops on a day trip from Taipei. Who knew the place was famous for a hairdresser?

Going after the ear hair

Going after the ear hair

We were strolling through Jui-Fen in the early evening, when Poor John spotted someone getting his haircut by Grandma. He went in, expecting to be served fairly soon. Turned out the guy already in the chair was getting ‘the works’. So Poor John waited and waited and waited.

Festive Jui-Fen, Taiwan

Jui-Fen is a popular and welcoming tourist town

We meandered around the touristy shops and checked on him from time to time. Still waiting. Maybe 45 minutes later, it was his turn. It didn’t take long to realise that he was getting ‘the works’ too. I stayed a while to take some pictures of this extravaganza, but wandered off with the kids to enjoyed the sights of Jui-Fen, including some startling products—most likely tea.

Soap or lollies?

I can’t read Chinese. Soap or tea?

Just so you know, ‘the works’ included a wash and dry, haircut, shave, eyebrow trim, nose and ear hair trim, other stray hair removal and more. It took close to an hour (Grandma even changed clothes). I forget the cost, but it was under A$15.

So what made us think Grandma is famous. There’s a plaque outside her shop. Written in two languages, this is what it says in English:

‘Situated on the Light-rail road, petite Grandma has seen the history of Jui-Fen through her haircuts, ear picking, baby hair trimming. Always wearing her signature thick-sole shoes and her smile. Many miners from old times still use her services, for their families have visited Grandma for three generations.’ I wonder how she and her regular customers have fared this year?

Hair washing

Getting the hair washed. Note the ‘signature’ thick-sole shoes

Poor John’s haircut tomorrow does include a shave. The receptionist told him not to shave over the weekend. The students are studying shaving and he is going to be one of their guinea pigs. I’m not going to take pics.

John is lucky, I hadn’t shaved all through the lockdown, when they opened, none did shaves any more, just a haircut, but even for a haircut you had to book an appointment, no walk ins, you used to be able to just wander in, a quick trip while the wife was shopping

That is one thing in Asia, you really get a good haircut and a shave, I like the way they look really close for these stray hairs, anywhere

It’s always lovely to be pampered. I recall a haircut in Vietnam. It was the first and only time a barber shaved the fuzz on top of my ears.

I’ve always wanted to experience “the works,” including the shave, with hot towels, etc. I’d thought I’d wait and do it in London some day, but should’ve realized, Taiwan or HK would be great, too. I usually manage to nick myself with a safety razor, you’ve got to have real skill to manage a straight razor. We do have some really skilled barbers in Milwaukee, some from Russia/Eastern Europe, some from Central America, and just the interesting conversations in the chair are worth the price of admission.

Talking of haircuts. I went into the city about 4 weeks ago and my hairdresser was so glad to see me. She and the ‘boss’ were only working 3 days a week but business was still slow. I wonder if the strict lockdown will end before my next haircut is due?

There is nothing quite like a real ‘barber shave’. I have been cutting what is left of my own hair for almost 20 years now, using electric clippers. I had to buy a small device for the nasal hairs, but luckily my ears haven’t started to sprout just yet. 🙂
Grandma gave a great service, that’s for sure.
    Best wishes, Pete.

Poor John looks so cool in a nice haircut… and with the works.

During this lockdown because of the C-virus in NYC, barber shops and salons are closed. People have then taken to their neighborhood streets and giving men/kids haircuts outside.

I sometimes give myself a motorized clipper haircut and have a small electronic device to do my extremely hairy ears and nose. Other times I go into Manhattan’s Chinatown and get a haircut from an excellent woman Chinese barber. When done she massages my back/neck and in winter (and sometimes in summer) I get a hot wet towel for my face… $10 US Dollars includes a tip.

Very nice! When I was in Bangkok I had a haircut like this sans the shave on my first day after arriving. It sort of looks like John was in a little room like I was, it’d be the perfect answer for the times we’re experiencing now. Also got my teeth cleaned and of course the compulsory Thai Foot Massage though part of the latter seemed like more torture than massage for me anyway.
Wish I’d had time for another cut before coming home as it’d been three weeks.

Unfortunately the waves have not relaxed with age. The return of the wavy pageboy! O. M. G. I do shave when required, and the ear and nose hair gets a daily. I swore in my youth I wouldn’t be one of those hair in funny places old guys, would be walking around with a visible of missed it shaving and wouldn’t wear dark socks with sandals. Or shorts. The way my hair is going, the socks may be next😂!

Getting a haircut in foreign land is always a fun experience, and from the look of it, Grandma did a really nice job. I had no idea that inside those colorful boxes are actually waffles! Now you give me an idea of what to buy for some of my friends when I go back to Taiwan one day.

Waffles in that packaging would make a great gift. I’m sorry I didn’t buy some just to see what was inside.

Those things in the boxes look gross, but I am sure the gimmick sells. A haircut to remember.

Btw, the paragraph that reads, “So what made us think Grandma is famous. There’s a plaque outside her shop…..”
Is typed over the media image. I am using my android phone so not sure if it is that image block or amp?

I haven’t popped over here for a while. Looks like you’ve been having a quieter time of the blogging thing too for a while. Love the Taiwan haircut story! Hope you weren’t in a hurry that day. “ear picking” – ewwh!

Good luck to Poor John on his shave! I don’t know if I’d want to be a guinea pig when it involves sharp objects!

Every experience you have is rich in cities, landscapes and anecdotes, which are so well written that they could easily be in a book. The thing about the grandmother hairdresser in Taiwan is great.
All year I have been able to enjoy your blog. Due to the language, sometimes it prevents me from commenting because the translator does not say what is meant. But I still manage to read you. Thank you for allowing me to travel comfortably in my armchair and follow your adventures around the world.
Happy Peggy Year to you and your family.

Thanks Carol. As you may have noticed, I haven’t posted in almost six months. Just not in the mood. Over the next few weeks, I’ll try to post 10 travel pics or maybe 10 actual blog posts, but I won’t nominate anyone. Almost every travel blog I follow has already been tapped and I wouldn’t feel right asking them again.

That’s a great price for all of what’s included in “The Works.” I’ve only had my hair trimmed about once or twice since the pandemic started because I’m afraid of catching covid. My hair is almost down to my rear end! I told John, my husband, that he’s going to have to learn how to trim my hair because I really don’t want to go to the salon. He’s afraid of messing up my hair.

Like you, my hair has been trimmed twice since the pandemic started. To be honest, I ‘m not especially afraid to go to the salon. The hairdresser is local and everyone there wears a mask.

That’s good they wear masks! The hairdresser that I and my husband go to doesn’t wear a mask, and she works at a hospital and goes on cruises and stuff. It scares me to be around her because I’m immunocompromised due to having MS and the medication I take for it.

Oh my goodness, no wonder you don’t want to go the the hairdresser. She really is going out and about. The risk is everywhere. My sister and niece went to a retreat in Florida last week. They both came home with Covid. Do whatever you need to do to stay safe.

I’m sorry your sister and niece caught Covid. I hope they recover quickly. A good friend of ours and her boyfriend caught covid this week, too. My grandpa died from it. It’s a very scary illness and I hope your sister and niece will be OK.

Peggy, as I age haircuts on the road become less and less of a problem. But there was a time in my past when my curly, white guy hair was a problem to maintain on the road. I didn’t do anything fancy, but many of the places I traveled just wasn’t accustomed to it. One of the worst haircuts I ever got cost me £75 at a posh London salon that I just wandered into. And when we lived in Sudan, after getting scalped once or twice I let Terri take over the job. Now, I just keep it really short, which works great. Good advice for any traveler. ~James

Yikes, Poor John would faint if he was ever charged £75 for a haircut. He’s pleased with the $15 rate charged by the hairdressing school not far from home. My worst haircut was in Zambia, where my curly, white woman hair flummoxed the hairdresser.
