A bit about us

Peggy and John

Poor John and Leggy Peggy biking in Hamburg

Welcome to our mayhem!

We are John and Peggy Bright from Canberra, Australia’s national capital.

Poor John (which will be his handle forevermore) is a retired Australian diplomat and lawyer. He is long suffering and I force him to do all this stuff. Yeah, right! Check out the truth. He’s from Adelaide, South Australia. And he loves travel and adventure.

I’m a freelance writer, specialising in plain English for the Australian Government. I’m originally from Nebraska, but left the USA in 1976 because I won a scholarship to do my master’s degree at the University of Cairo in Egypt.

Poor John and I met in Cairo. After my degree work, I returned to the USA to lecture in journalism at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. A little later we hooked up again and got married in Ajlun, Jordan, in 1980. After that, we spent quite a bit of time in the Middle East—especially Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Our first daughter was born in Damascus, Syria. We also had a few years living in South East Asia.

This blog is mostly about our extended road trips and the camping, sights, meals, happenings and occasional souvenirs that go with them.

Turkmenistan

A stroll in the desert in Turkmenistan

We’ve done a lot of time in cars, vans, trucks, buses, tuk tuks, trains, boats, ferries, donkeys, horses—you name it. And stayed in tents, hostels and cheap hotels most of the time. We’ve been part of many cook groups and shopped our way through food markets (one of my passions) in most parts of the globe.

We’ve loved two overland journeys in Africa, a Silk Road jaunt from London to Sydney (through the ‘Stans’ and Tibet), a second Silk Road trip from Tehran to Beijing, two expeditions in South America, many long jaunts in Australia, a train journey across Canada, an array of memorable tours in the USA, two road trips in India, and an expedition through Bhutan.

I reckon we’ve each more than 200,000 kilometres by road in the last five years—I wish there was a way to convert those to frequent flyer miles.

But our travels go way back and, when time permits, I’ll write about other, older adventures that you might find interesting. I love food, cooking and collecting cookbooks. I share that too, and you can check out my other blog—Cooking on page 32.

So drop in often—ask questions, leave comments. If you sign up to follow the blog, you’ll get an email every time I post a new item.

Confession: I’m almost always a little behind on the blog. Poor internet connections, too busy sightseeing, bouncing along on the back of a truck, lack of power are all reasons the blog jumps around from continent to continent (we’ve been to all seven).

Hope you don’t mind wondering exactly where in the world I am. There’s still lots of the world to explore.

Awards
And a quick comment about awards. Thanks in advance to everyone who nominates me for an award. It is most appreciated, but I will have to keep this blog award-free. We travel so much and in such remote places, I feel lucky when I have enough internet connection to get a blog post done. So thanks but please understand.

    LeggyPeggy and John,

Thanks for adding the “A Bit About Us” (just noticed it…). Now I have the complete picture on your grand tour via an overland truck; Here is the URL http://www.uktooz.com/index.asp for more info for people reading your blog.

Cool, great way to see the back country and meet the local people and countries most people don’t even consider going to…. and from my point of view missing a lot!

Have a safe trip… and take plenty of picture to show us all!

Hello to All who read this blog.

    LeggyPeggy today August 15, 2011 14:00 posted on a food message board… so I am writing to let everyone know she and Poor John are all right. Here is her comment;
    >I’ll tell some stories when I get back to Australia. Last week in Turkmenistan,
    I couldn’t even log into Food.com. They must think it’s subversive. icon_biggrin.gif
Things are a little better in Uzbekistan, but I still can’t get to my blog. icon_sad.gif<

Hi Peggy, I found your blog as I am seriously considering doing the london sydney explorer trip with uk to oz, which I think is the one you did. I’ve never even heard of the ”stan” countries and they are definitely not on my ”places to go list” – but I am hoping they are worth a trip. any comments on that would be welcome. I really wanted to do the odyssey that goes through India, but it doesn’t fit my timescale for 2012 and I don’t want to wait until 2013. Any tips or words of advice would be more than welcome. One question – how did you manage to post a blog on the trip, is there internet on the truck (somehow I doubt that) or did you just have to scout around for internet cafes when you hit a town? Look forward to your answer. All the best Erica

Hi Erica — nice to hear from you.

The ‘Stans’ were fascinating. The way I look at it, Indian will always be there, but the Stans might not always be available. Who knows? Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan were two of the highlights of our trip. I still need to write more about both, and will do more of that soon. My pics are good reminders.

It wasn’t always easy to do the blog. Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan were closed. Access to most of the internet was zilch. But I managed. I took a laptop and wrote items which I posted when I had the chance.

Some of South East Asia was hard too. But then I’d find WiFi in the most unexpected places. The availability of internet cafes was variable. I am way, way behind on the blog, but am still writing about the trip. Will probably be doing that for months to come. Feel free to ask more questions.

      Cheers
      Peggy

Also, I’m planning on visiting the five Stans next year so will appreciate your comments/insights re. the Silk Road. Will sign off now – dirty laundry spinning about, must go to the grocery store. O’Hare is on my list of airports I like to avoid. I have no experience with LA or Phoenix. I didn’t particularly like National in Washington, DC, but maybe that was because of the long wait to connect with a flight to Charlotte, NC. By and large, though, I have little experience flying west or southwest.

My only 3 forays outside the USA were Canada, 2 countries in Europe, and Morocco. I was in Morocco with my daughter for 2 weeks. That was quite an experience and I loved visiting the mountains. The Tagine chicken is amazing!

Hi back at you. I’ve enjoyed your blog and been interested especially for the walks and food aspects. Anyone who reveres a decent loaf of bread deserves my time. I’ll bring you a loaf next time I come to Omaha. Pity we hadn’t made the connection last year. I was there for some of December.

Hopefully some day I can supplement local walks stories with some place a bit more interesting, but actually I’m very thankful there is anything at all and wish Iowa/Nebraska would do more with what they’ve got. And maybe I’ll stop deliberating and add brewing to my bread making for one more way to exploit the magic of yeast.

I was going to suggest, if you’ve never heard of it, geodashing (website: geodashing.gpsgames.org). Each month there are 32,000 random points all over the world. You’ve probably already scored some (get within 100m) without knowing it. People go find these points and then write little reports about their journey and what they found. Interest has dropped since the early days when GPS was a novelty, but there are still fairly active dashers in U.S. and Australia (in fact, rival teams). But few people score points in places like you travel so your reports could liven up community.

Thanks for the reminder about GPS exploring. Not sure that geodashing is exactly the same as geocaching, but we have friends quite involved with the latter. Not sure why I never thought to combine it with our travels. There’s a geocache in the park in front of our house and, over the years, it’s been interesting to watch folks try to figure out the exact spot.

    Hi Peggy,
I was catching up on my WordPress, a little post-Christmas posting, and I found your site. I stayed a while to read and found some uncanny coincidences. You write about travel–I was recently introduced to travel writing. You schooled in Egypt–I married into Egypt “so to speak.” You have a schnauzer that hangs out the window (above)–I have a schnauzer that hangs at my heals (see gravatar). You were in Canberra–I live on a small court in California named after Canberra.

I figured all this is at least worth a follow, so here I am. 🙂
    Happy 2016!

So interested in your travel, your Egyptian details, your schnauzer (what size) and your whereabouts. If you are anywhere near Los Angeles (Anaheim in particular), maybe we can have a coffee when I’m there for a couple of days at the end of April.
Cheers and happy 2016 to you too. Now I’m off to explore your blog in more detail.

It would be great to meet you, alas I am about 600 miles north, in San Jose. The San Jose made famous by Dionne Warwick’s 1968 tune is now the heart of Silicon Valley. I think I’ve just dated myself. 😉

I will, however, look forward to your travel post on Anaheim and the LA area–sounds interesting (Anaheim is home to Disneyland). They say, if California is a state of mind then LA is a trip! This, from a NorCal gal.

        P.S.: Mini schnauzer
P.P.S.: If you’re ever in San Jose, coffee/tea sounds grand.

Hi Peggy, at last I’ve found your blog via Facebook. Seeing your comments reminded me of the wonderful trip we shared from London to Sydney (or in my case Tiblisi to Sydney). What a marvellous trip. I am very tempted to do it again. I will never forget the hospitality shown by yourself and “Poor John” to myself and Mary in your wonderful holiday home and your residence in Canberra. You were both amazing hosts.
I notice (with a certain amount of envy!) the many trips that yourself and “Poor John” have been on. Ye definitely have a wanderlust and I’m sure have some great stories too.
The only other extended trip that I’ve taken was around South America (six months). That was a great trip also but I would prefer the Asian trip for variety and exotic locations.
Peggy, I have looked down through your various trips and nowhere can I find Ireland. This is an omission that must be rectified!! Anyway, seriously I just wanted to let you know that if (when??) yourself and “Poor John” come over here there will always be a bed for you in my house.
    Happy camping.
    Best Regards
    Eamon

Thanks for the welcome to Ireland. I was there in 2003 and am long overdue to return. We’ll have to work on that.
Right now we are on a ship in the Southern Pacific Ocean. Not as exciting as a truck, but it’s getting us from Point A to Point B.
Best regards to you and Mary

Hi from the UK I’ve been enjoying reading a selection of your travel Posts, I wish I’d travelled more and I love the Bedford. I read a comment thread where you talked of how you felt lucky you travelled in more peaceful times and then I got to thinking when an earth did the world get to be such a dangerous place? It’s not that long ago when we holiday’d in Egypt or my brother interailed ending up in Israel and look at all those photos of a ‘Westernised’ Afghanistan with tourists, all very sad, I guess global 24 hour news is to blame. Oh dear I’ve gone all political! I’m gonna have a bite to eat then read a few more of your travel Posts 🙂 Andrew

Andrew, thanks so much for stopping by, and for puzzling over the question of ‘how did it come to this?’. There are places I will still travel quite happily—Egypt for one—but places that are a no-go now. Our first daughter was born in Syria during the Lebanese Civil War. She’s been able to return to Lebanon, but she may never be able to revisit the Syria we loved so much. We were back in Syria in 2009 when all was still calm. Today it is, as you said, all very sad.

Well, the first thing I need to do is convince my husband that this would be the greatest thing ever … maybe your money angle will do the trick! I think I’d like to start in Eastern Europe and drive across central Asia to Asia/SEAsia. But there are many other routes I’d like to consider … I could do it non-stop; Poor Jeff (to borrow your verbiage for one sentence) is not quite at that point yet!

Good luck sweet-talking Poor Jeff. We both travelled overland in the 70s, so had an understanding of this kind of travel. In recent years,we’ve been across Central Asia twice—one London to Sydney (seven months) and the other Tehran to Beijing (three months). Both trips were fantastic and cheap. Our longest, and most memorable, was 12 months in Africa.
We’re heading back to India for October and November and doing it all by road. Wanna come?

HI Karen, we got a great deal travelling last-minute and as seniors, and taking the cabins that were still available. I think we paid less than $900 for both of us, using two single-bed cabins (across the aisle from one another). I think the actual price would have been $1500–$2000 each.

You need to do something different if you want to spend more time in various cities along the way. Our trip was four days, and went straight through. We travelled Toronto to Vancouver, but you see more of the Rockies in daylight if you travel in the other direction.

Hope that helps, but feel free to ask more questions.

And any chance of getting you to Australia? We do road trips for visitors. You pick. 🙂

Thanks so very much for thinking of me. It is a wonderful award. I’m so glad you enjoy my blog. But I’ll have to decline. My blog has been award-free since the beginning. We are often travelling remotely, and with no internet connection, so I felt I couldn’t participate reliably. In fact, we head out on a camping trip on Saturday. So thanks again for the nomination, but I’ll have to say no for now. Hope you understand.

You rock Miss Peggy. I found a lovely orchid picture in the search engine and she sent me to you. I would ask permission to use her for daily inspiration. Then I read on you. Wow. Bhutan is on my list. And cooking!!! All matter of fermenting, slow cooking, experimenting in the science lab called the kitchen. Medicinal value of scrumptious spices and dishes. You are a wordsmith! Can not wait to check out the cuisine section. So, as I was say, may I use your orchid picture for personal inspiration? Have a most adventurous morning, wherever you, lovely young lady!

    Hi Peggy,
I found myself here after seeing a comment you left on Gerard Oosterman’s blog, and wow what a journey you’re living!

I’m currently working on creating a digital magazine, something like national geographic though obviously not as grand, and with a heavier focus on sustainability and equality. Some of your posts are just incredible, and I’m wondering if you would consider contributing an article. Something new or something old, anything from you would be great. I know how busy you are. My website should be visible through my profile. Let me now if you’re interested.
    All the best,
    Brett

      Hi Brett,
Good on you for starting something that focuses on sustainability and equality. I’d be happy to be involved. We can work out the logistics of what, where and when. Poor John and I head to West Africa in 12 days, so writing something new might be trickier. We’re away for two months. We’ll be travelling on the back of yet another overland truck with limited electricity and less internet. So is there an older item that appeals?

Thanks for your support, Peggy. That’s fantastic!

I’ve already seen a few of your older posts that were more than inspiring. What I might do, if it’s okay with you, is continue collecting stories for my first issue until it’s a bit further along. Then I’ll choose something from your archive that would balance the magazine out. I’ll keep you posted at every step, and let you read a prerelease edition to make sure you’re happy. Does that sound acceptable?

Hey Peggy, a big hello to yourself and “Poor John”. What a wonderful couple you are.You really have the travel bug. I had the pleasure of your company on an overland trip from London to Sydney back in 2011. What a wonderful trip. I will never forget it and often have “flashbacks”.
Yourself and “Poor John” were most hospitable hosts both in your Canberra home and in your holiday home on the coast. My wife Mary and myself had a great time with you both.
I can see from your blog that the dream continues because that’s what it is, a dream life travelling all over the world.
When is the book coming out??

The Brights are in our minds tonight as we occupy an ex farm worker’s cottage in the southern Grampians. By a roaring log fire in pelting rain we are celebrating our 53rd year of marriage. So many years ago in the Oratory of St Marks, JB, as best man, facilitated our nuptials.
