Off to the high seas and dream destinations

Striking Bird of Paradise flowers we saw today in the Company Gardens in Cape Town
Sorry to have been so quiet on the blog. Lots of reasons, mostly laziness and distractions. Here’s hoping for a change.
Poor John and I spent today exploring in Cape Town, South Africa. Tomorrow we set sail on an expedition ship across the South Atlantic. Stops are Tristan de Cunha, South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula, and Ushuaia, Argentina.
We’ve been to the Antarctic and Ushuaia before, but Tristan de Cunha (the most remote island in the world) and South Georgia (home to countless species of wildlife) have been dream destinations for me.
Sadly, internet will be limited (for example, no email) on the ship unless I pay an extra US$500. Even then it is still limited. Not sure blogs and photos can be posted. I’m trying to decide what to do. The family might like to hear from us.
So don’t worry if you don’t hear from me for the next three weeks. Consider your posts liked and commented upon. If I cough up the dollars, you may see more of me. Either way, I plan to get back to blogging in December. So much to tell.
Shown below is the route we take.

Starting in Cape Town, then travelling west to Tristan de Cunha, and then southwest to South Georgia and Antartica, and finally north to Ushuaia

So very glad you are doing this trip…. And back blogging… yahoo!

Best wishes, Pete.

I have seen these flowers on my trips
I think they are called bird of paradise flower, when you pick them they last a really long time
are you using tents or hostels on this trip?
I can imagine the internet is pretty much hit and miss in most places (it was when I was travelling) when you found a hotspot, everyone jumped on it to contact family friends, update their Facebook profile (which slows everything down)
Antarctica is going to be a fantastic place to visit (hoping to see lots of photos (internet allowing)
anyway Happy Travels

Thanks Derrick. Had a laugh about the tents. I’ll let you know. We all remember crappy internet when travelling.

Wow this is so cool! Tristan da Cunha, what an exotic place! I remember playing a shipwreck voyage came as a kid when you had to steer a boat from England to Western Australia, and you had to make a stop there to recoup. lol. Enjoy your voyage!

I’ve known of this exotic place ever since a friend was the governor of St Helena and Tristan de Cunha.

Thanks. Maybe we could make a tent out of blankets and pretend we are camping.

What an amazing trip. Stay safe and I hope the weather gods are kind to you especially on the high seas.
Seriously, spend that $500 on travel, not blogging. You can always blog or visit your favourite WordPress sites when you get home.
My advice is travel while you can. Life is for living and experiencing the wonderful world and cultures around us. I wish I’d travelled more when my health was good in my 20s, 30s & 40s. (no, cross off 40s, I had chronic pain and ill health by then).

Astoundingly wonderful! Talk about off the beaten paddle! I was just Wiki-cruising the S. Atlantic islands, too. (St. Helena & Napoleon’s ghost for next time…) S. Georgia! Speechless! Bon Voyage & look forward to your reports!
